Dear folks,

Please join us in our upcoming event on Nicaragua on Tuesday, October 22 at 6:30 PM. More details are provided below. I am also enclosing an article that was originally published in Spanish by Gabriela Luna entitled “Otra Nicaragua” meaning The Other Nicaragua. I am also enclosing the English version.

Mark your calendars for our annual human rights POT-LUCK event. It will be held on SAT, November 9 at 6:30 PM at the Roger Carter Community Center in Ellicott City. We will be sending more details soon.

Finally, if you missed our last event on Cuba on September 7 entitled: Status of US-Cuba Relations: The Path Forward, go to our www.friendsoflatinamerica.org. You will be able to watch the presentations by our guest speakers Miguel Fraga, First Secretary Embassy of Cuba and Mavis Anderson, Senior Associate of the Latin America Working Group

Feel free to share this information with your family and friends.

Thanks,

Leslie

Guest speaker: Camilo Mejía

camilo_mejia.jpgCamilo Mejía is Nicaraguan and resides in the US. In the early 2000s he became known because – as a soldier in the U.S. Army – he became a prisoner of conscience for refusing to return to combat in Iraq. Camilo maintains strong ties to Nicaragua and is very knowledgeable about world politics. Thus, he became a critic of mainstream media coverage of the violence in Nicaragua in 2018. Camilo is a contributor to the e-book: Live from Nicaragua: Uprising or Coup and will speak about the research and investigative reporting that went into the book. He will also give an update about peace and reconciliation efforts in Nicaragua. The e-book can be downloaded for free in English and Spanish.
