Everyone has a right to a healthy environment. But this right is not yet recognized in American federal or Maryland state law. Over the past 50 years, several US states and many nations around the world have codified this right in their constitutions. It is time Maryland did the same. This evening we will talk about the movement toward environmental constitutional protection, the status of this effort in Maryland, what the amendment can do, and the challenges it faces.
Rabbi Nina Beth Cardin has spent over a decade working both nationally and locally to engage faith communities in the sacred work of sustainability. She is now partnering with Waterkeepers Chesapeake to spearhead a campaign to create a Maryland constitutional amendment to guarantee our rights to a healthy environment.
The latter part of the evening will be spent on (a) identifying a local “drawdown” solution we want to focus on this year and (b) working on our county level legislative campaign. We always allow time for announcements of upcoming events.
