David Bernhardt, the Secretary of the Department of Interior (DOI), has so many conflicts of interest that he had to carry a card around so he would know what not supposed to work on. But that’s over now — he can help out his friends in the industry. And he is.

I wish I were making this up, but I’m not. Bernhardt is now using his power to promote the interests of his former clients, notably the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA). This association represents oil companies like Shell, ConocoPhillips and Marathon Oil that have multibillion dollar stakes in exploiting previously protected lands.

We can’t let him get away with abusing his influence as a public official.

We are calling on Congress to investigate whether Interior Secretary Bernhardt violated the spirit or the letter of any ethics laws that limit federal officials’ interactions with and on behalf of former clients. Additionally, we demand Congress investigate past clients of David Bernhardt — such as the IPAA — to discern whether they purposely and knowingly took advantage of their relationship with the Interior Secretary for financial gain.

We need public officials who prioritize our health, our water, and who know that we need to act on climate. We need Congress to investigate Secretary Bernhardt now.
