Tell your legislators to properly fund Maryland’s bus, MARC, subway, & light rail systems!

sierra club1Dear friends,

Public transit helps to protect the climate, and our air and water by reducing our reliance on gasoline-powered cars. Marylanders take over 300,000 trips on our state’s transit system every day to access jobs, healthcare, recreation, and many other destinations.

Unfortunately, Gov. Hogan is dramatically underfunding Maryland’s public transitsierra club 2 system, resulting in a $2 billion backlog for maintenance and projects needed by the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) for people to safely and reliably take public transit.

Write
youMaryland legislators to urge passage of the Transit Safety and Investment Act to properly fund Maryland’s transit system. The MTA operates MARC (commuter rail), local buses, commuter buses, paratransit, and the Baltimore Metro Subway and Central Light Rail, and provides funding to locally operated transit systems in every Maryland county.
This legislation (fact sheet) would help prevent buses from breaking down, and avoid more emergency shutdowns of the Baltimore Metro Subway and Central Light Rail which lasted for weeks. The bill also would provide funds needed to improve accessibility to stations, repair and replace rail track and switches, and increase sustainability efforts such as adding Electric Vehicle (EV) charging at Baltimore Metro stations and rooftop solar on bus shelters. Marylanders must be able to safely and reliably use public transit to get to places on time!

Write your legislators now to tell them that depriving public transit of basic capital funds hurts Marylanders and is bad public policy!

Support this campaign in person by joining us for Transit Legislative Action Day on Wednesday, February 12th from 4-8 PM in Annapolis. The day will include a rally outside the House Office Building and a public forum inside, in House room 170 (with pizza!), where you can speak to your legislators and Transit Caucus members to urge support for transit funding and our vision for a stronger public transit system! Sign up here!

Finally, remember to register to attend the Maryland Sierra Club’s annual Lobby Night, Monday, February 24 in Annapolis, where we will meet with legislators to again urge passage of the Transit Safety and Investment Act, and our other priority bills for this session.

Thank you,
