Monday, Feb. 18 — Reel and Meal at the New Deal presents POWER TO HEAL: Medicare and the Civil Rights Revolution, By threatening to withhold federal funding from any hospital that practiced racial discrimination, the implementation of Medicare in 1965 helped desegregate 2000 American hospitals virtually overnight. Lyndon Johnson sent 1,000 inspectors south who determined that half of southern hospitals remained segregated and would lose funding because of it. Panel discussion about today’s inequality in health care and the movement for universal health care with follow the film.
